Nickname
Battlehawks – As St. Louis sports fans, we are always eager to learn more about our beloved teams and the stories behind them. The St. Louis BattleHawks of the XFL are no exception! We’ve all heard their battle cry, “Rise Up!” but what does it mean? Where did this nickname come from?
St. Louis Battlehawks Origin
The origin story of the BattleHawks name dates back to World War II when a group of European pilots flew under an unofficial squadron called “The Black Hawks” due to their black-painted planes resembling hawks in flight. This squadron comprised volunteers determined to fight for freedom and justice against Nazi Germany during WWII.
They became known as some of the most effective fighter pilots ever seen at that time - hence why they chose such a fierce bird like a hawk as part of their identity, symbolizing strength, power & courage, which is precisely what these brave men possessed while fighting for something greater than themselves: freedom & justice!
Fast forward many years later into 2020 where we now have an XFL team proudly representing St Louis with its version named after those same courageous pilots – The Battlehawks – because just like them, this football team will rise above any obstacle or challenge presented before them on game day with determination, grit & resilience just like those heroic fighters had done so many years ago during wartime - ready for anything that comes their way RISE ST LOUIS BATTLEHAWKS!!!
