Rhode Island Breakers History – Team Origin and Achievements

The Rhode Island Breakers history starts in 2026, when the UFL picked Pawtucket as the home of its newest team. Playing as the Rhode Island Breakers UFL club, the team starts play in spring 2027 at Centreville Bank Stadium. It is built on the roster and coach of the former Birmingham Stallions, so the Breakers begin with a team that has already won a lot of games together.

Nickname
Breakers – The Rhode Island Breakers nickname comes from the waves that crash against the rocky shores of the Ocean State. UFL President and CEO Russ Brandon said the name stands for a force that never backs down, never lets up, and just keeps coming. The team chose a name tied to the water because the sea is a big part of life in Rhode Island, from its fishing towns to its sailing harbors.

Rhode Island Breakers Origin

The name also brings back a piece of spring football history. The original Breakers played in the USFL from 1983 to 1985, in Boston, New Orleans, and Portland. The new team takes that name but builds its own identity in Rhode Island. Rhode Island also has pro football roots of its own, as the Providence Steam Roller played there in the early days of the NFL, and the UFL mentioned that team when it introduced the Breakers.

The logo follows the same sea theme. A lighthouse stands in for the “I” in “RI,” rising from a bold “R.” The team’s colors are Riptide Blue, Nor’easter Navy, Beacon Yellow, and Whitecap, and each one nods to the Ocean State.

Rhode Island Breakers History

The UFL announced it was adding Rhode Island and Colorado as new teams for 2027, with Utah and Oklahoma to follow in 2028. After the 2026 season, the league moved teams out of Birmingham and Houston, and the Rhode Island Breakers Birmingham Stallions link comes from that move. The Stallions won three straight titles from 2022 to 2024 across the USFL and the UFL, then went 4-6 in 2026. The Breakers were built from that franchise, and the Stallions’ roster moved north with them.

AJ McCarron was named head coach on September 30, 2026. McCarron won three national titles at Alabama, played in the NFL, and later became one of the UFL’s best quarterbacks with the St. Louis Battlehawks. He also coached the Stallions. The team’s name, logo, and colors were shown to fans on October 18, 2026, at a launch party inside Centreville Bank Stadium. Fans can read more about the league on the UFL team history page. You can also check the Rhode Island Breakers Wikipedia page for more information.

The Breakers are the only team in the UFL’s Northeast, and their first home game is set for Friday, April 2, 2027, at 8 p.m. The rest of the roster will come from UFL Showcase players, free agents, and the 2027 UFL Draft in St. Louis, where Rhode Island holds the third overall pick.

Rhode Island Achievements

The Breakers haven’t played a game yet, but they already have a few firsts. They are the first UFL team in Rhode Island, and the first pro football team in the state in a long time. They also start with a coach and a group of players who have already won titles together, which is rare for an expansion team.

With a lighthouse logo, a coach fans can get behind, and a home field in Pawtucket, the Rhode Island Breakers are ready to make some noise when the 2027 season starts.
