Nickname
Stampede – The Colorado Stampede nickname comes from the state’s old western roots and the wide-open spirit of the Great Plains. A stampede is a herd moving fast and hard in one direction, and that is the picture the league wanted for its new team. UFL President and CEO Russ Brandon said the name stands for power, grit, and an unstoppable force moving forward as one.
Colorado Stampede Origin
The name goes hand in hand with the team’s bison mascot. The logo uses Bison Brown for the body of the animal, and the beard, nose, eye, and forehead “C” are in Canyon Red, a color taken from the red rock of the Garden of the Gods. Colorado Springs Mayor Yemi Mobolade said the logo also shows the snowcapped look of the mountains nearby. The team picked a look that feels like Pikes Peak country, not just a generic football brand.

Colorado Stampede History
The UFL announced a new Colorado team on September 23, 2026, as part of a plan to add four new markets. Colorado and Rhode Island will join the league in 2027, followed by Utah and Oklahoma in 2028. The team’s name and logo were shown to fans on October 25, 2026, at a launch party inside Weidner Field. You can read more about the club on Wikipedia.
Rick Neuheisel is the head coach, and the Colorado Stampede Rick Neuheisel story is a homecoming. He coached the Colorado Buffaloes from 1995 to 1998, going 33-14 and winning the Cotton Bowl in his first two seasons. He led the Dallas Renegades in 2026, going 4-6, and then moved to Colorado Springs with a group of Renegades players to form the base of the first Stampede roster. Kevin Sumlin took over as head coach in Dallas.
The Stampede will play five home games at Weidner Field in downtown Colorado Springs, which is also home to the Switchbacks soccer team. At 6,035 feet above sea level, it is the highest pro football stadium in the country. The first home game is set for Sunday, April 11, 2027, at 1 p.m. MT on ABC, and season tickets start at $75. A UFL draft on November 18 in St. Louis will help fill out the rest of the roster. Fans can also read about the league on the UFL team history page.
Stampede Achievements
The team hasn’t played a game yet, but the Colorado Stampede has already hit a few firsts. It is the first UFL team in Colorado Springs, and its home field is the highest-elevation stadium in pro football. Neuheisel also brings a strong head coaching record in the state from his days at Colorado, and he has a ready-made group of players from Dallas to start with.
With a bold bison brand, a coach fans already know, and a home field no other pro team can match, the Colorado Stampede is ready to make a loud entrance when the 2027 season begins.
