1946 - Jacksonville State basketball team is established

In 1946, the Jacksonville State basketball team was established. The team was created as part of the athletic program at Jacksonville State Teachers College, which is now known as Jacksonville State University.

The team’s early years were marked by a lack of resources and a small fan base, but they gradually grew in popularity over time. During the 1950s and 1960s, the Gamecocks competed in the Alabama Intercollegiate Conference, which is now known as the Gulf South Conference.

In 1970, the Gamecocks won their first Ohio Valley Conference championship, which marked a significant milestone for the program. The team continued to compete in the Ohio Valley Conference for many years and gradually built a reputation as a strong basketball program.

Throughout the program’s history, several notable players and coaches have been associated with the team. One of the most successful coaches in the team’s history was Bill Jones, who led the Gamecocks from 1982 to 2003. Under Jones’ leadership, the team won four Ohio Valley Conference championships and made several appearances in the NCAA Division II tournament.

Today, the Jacksonville State basketball program continues to compete in the Ohio Valley Conference and has established itself as one of the top basketball programs in the region.
