Ohio Valley Conference History

The Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) has been a cornerstone of college athletics since its establishment in 1948. The conference, which includes several competitive Ohio Valley Conference teams, is recognized for its excellence across multiple sports. It consists of 12 member schools located in Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, and Alabama. While the OVC is best known for basketball, it also sponsors football, baseball, softball, and many other collegiate sports, reflecting the athletic depth of Ohio Valley Conference schools.

The OVC began with six founding universities: Eastern Kentucky University (EKU), Murray State University (MSU), Morehead State University (MSE), Austin Peay State University (APSU), Western Kentucky University (WKU), and Middle Tennessee State College (now Middle Tennessee State University). These original Ohio Valley Conference schools were instrumental in shaping the league’s foundation when it was initially called the “Ohio River Valley Athletic Conference.”

As decades passed, the OVC expanded to include additional Ohio Valley Conference teams such as Southeast Missouri State, Jacksonville State, UT Martin, Eastern Illinois University, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE), and Tennessee Tech. Each school brought its own athletic identity and success stories, enriching the OVC’s legacy that now spans over seven decades.

Eastern Kentucky Colonels – Joining as a charter member in 1948, EKU has been one of the most successful Ohio Valley Conference teams. The Colonels have captured 14 regular-season championships and 6 tournament titles. From 1980 to 1990, EKU made 11 consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, cementing their dominance within the Ohio Conference.

Murray State Racers – Founded in 1922 and joining the OVC in 1949, Murray State has consistently ranked among the top Ohio Valley Conference schools. With 13 regular-season titles, 10 tournament championships, and 7 NCAA Tournament appearances—including 4 Sweet 16 runs—the Racers have built a rich legacy of success that highlights the competitive strength of the Ohio Valley Conference.

Morehead State Eagles – Joining the league in 1949, Morehead State became one of the premier programs in OVC history. The Eagles have claimed 17 regular-season championships and 9 tournament titles. Their 8 NCAA Tournament appearances showcase their consistency and excellence as one of the most decorated Ohio Valley Conference teams in history.

Austin Peay Governors – Established in 1927, Austin Peay joined the Ohio Valley Conference in 1949 and has played a key role in the league’s athletic heritage. The Governors have earned a regular-season championship and remain known for their spirited basketball rivalries and contributions to the overall competitiveness of Ohio Valley Conference schools.

Throughout its long and successful history, the Ohio Valley Conference has earned national recognition for producing strong athletic programs and talented student-athletes. The conference’s commitment to sportsmanship and academic excellence has made it one of the most respected NCAA Division I leagues.

Over the years, Ohio Valley Conference teams have made significant marks in national tournaments, particularly in basketball and baseball. Many Ohio Valley Conference schools have produced professional athletes who continued their success beyond college, further enhancing the OVC’s reputation as a conference built on tradition, achievement, and passion for collegiate sports.
