History of the Red Bulls
The New York Red Bulls of Major League Soccer (MLS) have had a storied history since their inception in 1996. Originally known as the MetroStars, they were one of the original 10 teams that formed MLS and played their first season in 1996. The team was rebranded as the New York Red Bulls before the 2006 season and has been competing under this name ever since.
Under its new branding, the New York Red Bulls have enjoyed plenty of success on both domestic and international levels. They won their first major trophy when they lifted MLS Cup in 2008, becoming only one of four teams to win it at least once during its existence so far. The club reached two U-20 CONCACAF Champions League finals between 2011-2013 but failed to win either time due to tough competition from Mexican sides Tigres UANL & Club America, respectively.
In recent years, however, there is no denying that things haven’t gone according for them domestically, with just three playoff appearances over the last five seasons combined. Despite such adversity, fans can take solace from the fact that the team still managed to make deep runs into US Open Cup & Canadian Championship tournaments year after year, even reaching the final 2019 edition former before losing out to eventual winners Atlanta United FC penalty shootout drama. With some shrewd signings offseason addition of new head coach Gerhard Struber, hopes are high amongst supporters going into the 2020 campaign will finally bring long-awaited silverware back Big Apple again soon!
