Nickname
Wildcats – The Los Angeles Wildcats of the XFL have a storied history and an exciting nickname that has been around for more than a century. The team was founded in 1901 as the Los Angeles Wildcats, then known as the Pacific Coast Professional Football League (PCPFL). The name “Wildcats” is thought to come from their fierce rivalry with another PCPFL team, the San Francisco 49ers.
Los Angeles Wildcats Origin
When choosing a mascot for this new professional football league, they chose one representing their competitive spirit: wild cats! It was also fitting since California is home to several species of wild cats, such as mountain lions and bobcats. This choice represented their competitive nature and paid tribute to these majestic animals living in our state's forests and mountains.
Today, when you think about LA Wildcats football, you immediately envision strength and toughness on both sides of the ball - traits embodied by wild cats themselves! From its inception until now, this powerful nickname has remained synonymous with success throughout many years of competing at all levels of competition, including youth leagues up through college football programs across America today – something we can all be proud of here in Southern California!

Los Angeles Wildcats History
The Los Angeles Wildcats were a professional football team that competed in the XFL, one of the leagues designed to bring fast-paced and fan-driven football back to life. The XFL team was announced in 2019 and officially began play during the league’s 2020 season. Based in Los Angeles, California, the Los Angeles Wildcats represented one of the major sports cities in the United States, showcasing the passion and energy of West Coast football.
Under the ownership of Alpha Entertainment, led by Vince McMahon, and head coach Winston Moss, the Los Angeles Wildcats quickly gained attention for their aggressive defensive style and powerful offensive plays. The team played their home games at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California — a venue shared with the LA Galaxy of Major League Soccer.
Despite the shortened 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Los Angeles Wildcats showed promise. They finished the season with a 2-3 record before league operations were suspended. One of their most notable victories came against the DC Defenders, where the XFL team scored 39 points, showcasing their offensive strength.
The Los Angeles Wildcats featured several standout players, including quarterback Josh Johnson, who became one of the most efficient passers in the league. Linebacker Shawn Oakman, known for his dominance on the defensive line, helped the XFL team maintain a strong defensive reputation. Their balance of offense and defense made them one of the most exciting franchises to watch during their short stint.
Wildcats Achievements
Even though the XFL’s first relaunch was interrupted, the Los Angeles Wildcats left a mark on fans for their dynamic play and competitive spirit. When the XFL later restructured under new ownership, including Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Los Angeles was not immediately reinstated as a returning franchise, but the legacy of the Los Angeles Wildcats continues to be remembered by football enthusiasts nationwide.
Memorable Victory Over DC Defenders (2020)
One of the most talked-about achievements of the Los Angeles Wildcats was their dominant 39–9 win over the DC Defenders. It was one of the highest-scoring games in the XFL, proving the team’s offensive firepower and strong coordination.
Player Recognition
Quarterback Josh Johnson was recognized among the top passers in the XFL, while linebacker Shawn Oakman became a fan favorite for his defensive strength. Their contributions made the Los Angeles Wildcats one of the most balanced teams in the league during its short-lived 2020 season.
