Dragons – Seattle Dragons fans, rejoice! The XFL has officially announced the team name for Seattle’s new professional football franchise: Seattle Dragons. But what do we know about the origin of this powerful and symbolic moniker? Let’s take a look at how it all came to be.
Seattle Dragons Origin
The process began with a survey of residents in which they were asked to submit their ideas for potential names that would best represent the city and its people. After collecting thousands of submissions, including “Seahawks," "Rainmakers," “Emerald City Warriors," and more, five finalists emerged from this pool: Orcas, Rainiers, and Sockeyes (all paying homage to various aspects of Pacific Northwest culture), as well as Renegades and Dragons (both offering an exciting alternative).
Ultimately, it was clear that one option resonated with locals far more than any other – dragons! Representing strength & power, passion & loyalty - qualities deeply ingrained in both sports teams across America but especially those playing under Seattle's banner - these mythical creatures seemed like an obvious choice when considering who should lead us onto victory each Sunday come to fall 2020.
Beyond being incredibly fitting for our region, however, there is another reason why dragons have been chosen; they are often seen as symbols of transformation & change – something very relevant given our current state both on-field and off-. With such strong ties between dragon lore & modern-day symbolism then, plus its ability to unite us all behind one cause here in Washington State, only time will tell if this nickname proves worthy enough by season end...but until then, let's get ready to roar!
