It all began in 1893 when football was first introduced to campus. At that time, LSU was known as Louisiana State Normal School, and they wanted to choose an appropriate mascot for their new team. After much discussion, students decided on “Tigers” due to their strength and ferocity - characteristics they felt represented themselves and their school well.
Since then, the Tiger has been adopted by many different sports teams at LSU, including baseball, basketball, softball, and more! The mascot even made it onto official university logos during specific periods throughout history - further solidifying its place within the culture of college athletics.
As time passed, the tiger became such an essential part of life at LS U that it inspired other universities across America. Today, many schools boast tigers as mascots or symbols associated with athletic programs – but none quite like those found cheering on our beloved Tigers every Saturday night in Death Valley!
