History of the Gaels
One of the most notable moments in Iona Gaels sports team history was in 1980 when the men's basketball team made it to the NCAA tournament for the first time. Led by head coach Jim Valvano, the Gaels made a memorable run to the Sweet Sixteen, defeating the heavily favored Holy Cross in the first round. This Cinderella story put Iona on the map and solidified its place in college basketball. The Gaels have since made 13 appearances in the NCAA tournament, with their most recent appearance in 2019.
In addition to their success in basketball, the Iona Gaels have also had impressive achievements in other sports. The men's cross country team has won 29 MAAC championships and has produced multiple individual national champions.
