Nickname
Blazers - The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is home to the UAB Blazers, one of the country's most iconic college sports teams. The team's nickname has been around since 1977, and its origin story is unique.
UAB Blazers Origin
It all began when UAB sought a new mascot to represent its school spirit and enthusiasm for athletics. After much deliberation, they settled on "Blazers" as it paid homage to both their location in Birmingham - known as 'the Magic City' because it was so rapidly industrialized after being found - and also embodied strength, speed, power, and agility – all qualities that make up an excellent athlete.
The name stuck with fans quickly due to its originality compared with other collegiate mascots such as Wildcats or Bulldogs; plus, there were already several schools across the nation using similar nicknames like Trailblazers or Blazes, which made them stand out even more! It wasn't long before people started referring fondly referring to them simply by saying “Go Blazers” or wearing apparel featuring their logo: two crossed swords set against a blue background representing fire coming from within each player on-field success over time has only added more weight behind this moniker making sure everyone knows who they are cheering for when they hear those three simple words “Let’s Go Blazers!”
As you can see, UAB's beloved Blazer nickname does not come without meaning—it embodies what makes athletes great while paying tribute to where we call home here at UAB! So next time you watch your favorite NCAA game, be proud knowing that our Blazer stands tall among some of America's best teams today.

UAB Blazers History
The UAB Blazers represent the University of Alabama at Birmingham and have built a proud tradition in NCAA sports. Originally fielding teams under the name Golden Eagles, the program officially became the UAB Blazers in the late 1970s, establishing a distinctive identity. Known for their fierce rivalry with the Southern Miss Golden Eagles, the Blazers have become one of the most competitive programs in the region across multiple sports.
The rise of UAB Blazers basketball in particular has been impressive. After joining Conference USA in 1995, the men’s team captured four straight conference championships between 1992 and 1995 while still an independent program. They also claimed two National Invitation Tournament (NIT) titles during that era. The program has reached multiple NCAA Tournaments, highlighted by a remarkable 2004 run to the Elite Eight, where the Blazers upset Kentucky in one of the program’s most celebrated victories.
Success for UAB Blazers basketball continued into the 2000s and 2010s with additional NCAA Tournament appearances, including Sweet 16 trips in 2004 and 2011. The Blazers also captured a National Invitational Tournament Championship in 2005 and three regular-season Conference USA titles since 1997. These consistent achievements cemented the UAB Blazers basketball program as one of the strongest mid-major programs in the nation.
The UAB Blazers football program, launched in 1991, has grown steadily to national recognition. After early struggles, the team achieved a breakthrough with multiple bowl game appearances, including wins in the Bahamas Bowl (2017) and the Conference USA Championship Game (2018 and 2020). Under head coach Bill Clark, the UAB Blazers football program not only returned after a brief shutdown in 2015 but also rose to become a model of resilience and success, setting attendance records and earning Top 25 votes.
Blazers Achievements
Women’s athletics at UAB have also flourished. The women’s basketball team earned a Conference USA title in 2021 under coach Randy Norton, and the baseball team has seen consistent postseason play, producing MLB-level talent. Soccer, volleyball, and golf have each brought home conference titles as well, making the UAB Blazers a comprehensive force across NCAA sports.
All these accomplishments make it clear why the UAB Blazers, from UAB Blazers football to UAB Blazers basketball and beyond, hold a special place in Alabama sports culture. Whether you’re cheering inside Protective Stadium, at Bartow Arena, or following from home, the green and gold represent excellence, determination, and pride for the University of Alabama at Birmingham community.
