Nickname
Aggies - The New Mexico State Aggies have a long and storied history in college sports, dating back to the early 1900s. The team’s nickname is derived from the school mascot, an Aggie or wild Mustang. This nickname has been used since 1923, when it was first adopted by New Mexico A&M (now known as NMSU).
New Mexico State Aggies Origin
The origin of this name dates back even further than that, though. In 1885, a group of students at what was then known as Las Cruces College formed an athletic club called “the Aggies” after their beloved horseback riding instructor who had recently passed away – John Clementson-Smith. As time went on and athletics became more popular at the university level, so did “the Aggies” moniker for its teams representing NMSU Athletics in various sports competitions across America and beyond!
Today, the term "Aggies" serves both as a source of pride for alumni and current students alike while also being widely recognized outside of campus circles due to its affiliation with NCAA Division I teams competing in multiple conferences throughout every season, such as football (Sun Belt), basketball (Western Athletic Conference) baseball/softball (WAC), golf & tennis(Mountain West Conference) track & field/cross country(Conference USA). It's no wonder many fans take great pride in wearing their favorite colors - crimson red & white - while cheering on their beloved alma mater during each game they attend!
In addition to having one heckuva mascot name behind them, The New Mexico State University Athletics program is also home to some impressive achievements over recent years, including winning three consecutive WAC championships between 2015-2017, making two appearances in NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament Sweet Sixteen round since 1992; plus several individual honors earned by student-athletes like All American selections for both men's basketball programs within last five seasons alone! So if you're looking for reasons why everyone should be proud about being part Of 'Aggie Nation,' look no further than these accomplishments, which speak volumes about how much success can come from hard work and dedication combined with school spirit support day after day...Go Ags!!
