Braves - For sports fans, Alcorn State University is a well-known powerhouse in the NCAA. The Braves have consistently been one of the top programs in their division and have won multiple championships over the years. But did you know that there's an interesting story behind their nickname?
The Alcorn State Braves were named after a famous battle between two Native American tribes ––the Choctaw and Chickasaw––in 1813. According to legend, Chief Pushmataha of the Choctaw tribe declared himself “Chief of all Chiefs” during this battle, which earned him his title of “The Brave Warrior” or simply "Braves." Alcorn State eventually adopted this moniker when they decided to become part of Division I athletics in 1954.
In addition to being named for this legendary chief warrior, it's said that some members from both tribes fought alongside each other during this historic battle—a symbol of unity among rival nations even today at Alcorn State University! As such, many students proudly wear apparel featuring both tribal symbols on campus as a sign of respect for those who sacrificed so much before them.
It's no wonder many people are proud supporters and alumni of such an impressive institution like Alcorn State! With its rich history rooted deeply within Native American culture and its winning tradition on the field--it truly makes sense why they're referred to affectionately as "The Braves."

History of the Braves
The Alcorn State Braves are an NCAA Division I college athletic program that has existed since 1871. The school is located in Lorman, Mississippi, and competes as a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) member. They have won numerous championships, including three consecutive SWAC Football Championships from 2013-2015.
The Alcorn State Braves football team is one of the most successful programs within their conference and across all NCAA Division I teams. In addition to winning three consecutive SWAC titles, they have also had several players go on to play at both professional and collegiate levels after leaving Alcorn State. Some notable former alumni include NFL Hall of Fame quarterback Steve McNair, Super Bowl champion offensive tackle Terrence Cody, All-Pro wide receiver Chad Johnson, Pro Bowl running back James Davis, and many others who enjoyed great success in professional sports leagues worldwide.
In addition to their strong football program, other sports, such as basketball and baseball, also hold a significant place at Alcorn State University, with successful teams competing throughout recent history for championships each year within their respective conferences or divisions. For example, the women's basketball team won two straight regular season titles between 2017-2018, while men’s basketball captured its first-ever tournament championship during this same period by defeating Jackson state university 59–50. Baseball has also seen some success recently with multiple appearances in regional tournaments over the past few seasons, culminating into a championship appearance last year against Southern Miss, where unfortunately, they fell short but still put up quite a fight until the game’s end score was 7–4 favoring USM side.
Overall it can be said that when it comes down to college athletics, Alcorn state braves take pride not only in themselves but in the entire region due to their being able to represent the whole SWAC conference through various accomplishments achieved by different sports programs offered there, making sure every fan out there knows what name stands for excellence no matter what level playing field may be!
