Nickname
Fighting Camels - The origin of the Campbell Fighting Camels nickname is a unique and exciting story that dates back to the early 1920s. The university, located in Buies Creek, North Carolina, was initially known as Buies Creek Academy, and its athletic teams were known as the Hornets. However, in 1925, the school's president, James Archibald Campbell, wanted to change the name to something more unique and representative of the school's location. He suggested the nickname "Camels" after the nearby Cape Fear River, known for its abundance of wild camels. The Fighting Camels nickname was added in the 1970s to reflect the university's competitive spirit and determination.
The Campbell Fighting Camels nickname has become synonymous with the university's athletic teams and has garnered a solid following among sports fans. The nickname pays homage to the school's founder and represents the resilience and determination of the athletes who proudly wear the camel logo. The Fighting Camels have a long history of success in various sports, including football, basketball, and baseball. They have also produced several notable athletes who have gone on to compete at the professional level. The nickname has become a source of pride for the university and its fans and is often chanted and displayed proudly at games and events.
In addition to its unique origin and representation of the university's competitive spirit, the Campbell Fighting Camels nickname also serves as a reminder of the school's commitment to academic excellence. The camel is known for surviving in harsh environments, and this resilience and determination is reflected in the university's motto, "Ad Astra Per Aspera," or "To the Stars Through Difficulties." This motto is instilled in all aspects of the university, including its athletic programs. As a sports fan, seeing the Fighting Camels embody this motto on and off the field is inspiring, making the nickname even more meaningful.

In recent years, the Campbell Fighting Camels have continued to make strides in their athletic programs, with the addition of new sports such as lacrosse and women's golf.
