The Bulldogs - a name that perfectly encapsulates the tenacity, grit, and determination our teams demonstrate on the field and court. The story of how we became the Bulldogs is as interesting as our journey on the sports field.
It all started back in the early 20th century. In those days, our school was simply known as The Citadel, without any official athletic nickname. However, the need for a mascot gained momentum as our teams began to assert their presence in various sports. A symbol was needed, something that represented our indomitable spirit and determination. After much consideration, the bulldog was chosen. Bulldogs are known for their toughness, resilience, and unwavering loyalty - traits that resonated with our teams and the larger Citadel community.
The name was officially adopted in 1922, and it was an instant hit with fans and players alike. The Citadel Bulldogs, as we were now known, began to make a name for ourselves, not just for our improved performance but for the spirit the new name imbued. We were like bulldogs - determined, fearless, and resilient. We never back down, no matter the opponent or the odds stacked against us.
