Nickname
Trojans - The Troy Trojans are one of NCAA history's most storied college football programs. The team has won four national championships and has been a perennial powerhouse since its inception. But what do you know about the origins of their nickname?
Troy University, located in Alabama, was founded as Troy State Normal School by former Confederate soldier John Robinson Tribble in 1887. At that time, it was just a small teacher’s school and had little to distinguish itself from other schools around the state — except for its mascot: The Trojan Horse. It seems that when Tribble chose this mythical creature as his school's symbol, he knew exactly what he was doing; after all, who doesn't recognize the story of Odysseus' clever ruse against his enemies?
As far back as 1911, there were references to students being referred to as “Trojans” at sporting events held on campus or off-campus locations such as Birmingham or Mobile (where some games were played). By 1925 “Trojan Football Team” had become an official part of Troy University's identity, and they haven't looked back since then! Today they are known simply by their nickname throughout college football circles — with no mention needed for which university they represent!
As sports fans, we can appreciate how vital nicknames can be when showing support for our favorite teams, whether through chants during games or wearing apparel proudly displaying them outside stadiums across America. These names carry immense power behind them! So next time you hear someone talking about "the Trojans," don't forget where this moniker came from - because without knowing its origin, we'd never truly understand why so many people love cheering on these warriors every Saturday afternoon!

History of the Trojans
Since its inception in 1891, the Troy Trojans have been a powerhouse of college athletics. This team has seen everything from their early days as an independent program to their current status as NCAA Division I-A Sun Belt Conference members. With more than a century's history and success behind them, there is no shortage of stories to tell about the Troy Trojans' sports teams.
The first official game for the university was held in 1895 against Alabama Polytechnic Institute (now Auburn University). The game ended with a scoreless tie but marked a significant milestone for both schools and set into motion what would become one of college football’s longest rivalries. Since then, Troy has continued to build on that foundation by winning numerous conference championships over time, including three consecutive bowl games from 2006-2008 under legendary head coach Larry Blakeney who retired after 24 seasons at the helm in 2014, making him one of the most successful coaches ever at school level.
One thing that makes this team stand out among others is its commitment to academics; they are consistently ranked among the top academic programs nationally due primarily to thanks strong leadership provided by athletic director John Hartwell since his arrival in 2001. This focus on excellence extends beyond the classroom, with student-athletes also having the opportunity to participate in various community service initiatives throughout the year, something which many other universities don't prioritize or even offer students the chance to do. It gives players a sense of purpose outside the field and helps foster lifelong relationships between them and residents – something that can be very special!
In addition, to having great traditional success off the field, Trojan Football teams had had plenty of notable accomplishments during the past few decades, too, including being named National Champions in 1997 when led quarterback Darnell Kennedy led the squad perfect 13–0 record, culminating victory over Marshall Thundering Herd Sugar Bowl New Orleans Louisiana December 28th same year! They've made several appearances in post-season play since then, such as Liberty Bowl 2011, GoDaddy Bowl 2012 Boca Raton Florida Armed Forces San Diego California 2018, respectively - proving once again how competitive these guys are!
Whether you're a fan, old or new, there are always plenty of reasons to cheer on your favorite Trojan sports team each week and support their hard work and dedication toward achieving greatness in everyday life! So make sure to come out and show some love next time they take court pitch diamond track, whatever else you may be playing...Go TROY!!
