Nickname
Cavaliers - The University of Virginia is home to one of the country's most successful NCAA Division I athletics programs. As they are known, the Cavaliers have been a powerhouse in college sports for decades, and their nickname has an exciting history.
The name "Cavaliers" was first used by William & Mary's football team during the 1895 season when they played against UVA. It was meant to compliment UVA's players, who were seen as brave warriors on horseback or cavaliers ready for battle - hence the moniker has stuck with them ever since!
In 1921, then-UVA president Edwin Alderman officially adopted “Cavaliers” as UVA’s official mascot after he heard it used by students and alumni alike at sporting events. Since then, Cavalier pride has only grown stronger over time, and today you can find fans proudly wearing orange and blue throughout Charlottesville on game day!
From its humble beginnings over 100 years ago up until now ––the Cavaliers continue to represent excellence both on and off the field with their championship performances year after year, proving that this nickname truly suits them well!

History of the Cavaliers
The Virginia Cavaliers are one of history's most storied college sports teams. With an impressive record that includes three NCAA Division I men’s basketball championships, two College World Series titles, and numerous conference championships, it is no wonder why they have become such a beloved team among fans. The University of Virginia has been home to some of the greatest athletes in collegiate sports over the years. It has produced many professional players who have made their mark at higher levels, often facing a fierce rivalry with the Virginia Tech Hokies.
The Cavaliers began competing athletically in 1888 when they joined what was then known as the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association (SIAA). Since then, UVA has had its share of success both within its conference and nationally, with multiple championship wins throughout various divisions, including football, baseball, and basketball. In 1989 alone, UVA won a national championship for men's soccer while winning an ACC title for women's lacrosse that same year—a feat not seen by any other school before or since!
In recent times however, UVA athletics have continued to excel under head coach Tony Bennett who took charge back in the 2009-2010 season, leading them all way through 2019, where he led them to win their third NCAA Championship title after beating Texas Tech 85-77 making this his first ever National Title victory with Virginia Cavaliers Basketball program - something which will be remembered forever amongst fans across America! Despite being relatively new compared to some other programs like Duke or North Carolina, there is no denying just how much progress Coach Bennett has made since taking over from previous coaches Dave Leitao & Pete Gillen, respectively – giving us hope that more success awaits this historic university moving forward into future seasons too!
