The nickname “Chanticleers” was inspired by Geoffrey Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales, specifically from the character Chauntecleer—a proud rooster who speaks confidently and wit. This character resonated with those at Coastal Carolina University when selecting a mascot for their athletics program in 1984, as he embodied qualities like courage, determination, and strength—all values shared by student-athletes at CCU today!
In addition to its literary roots, there is another reason why this nickname was chosen: it rhymes perfectly with “Coastal Carolina." This gave them an extra layer of branding power and made it easier for fans to cheer on their team during games or other events.
