Nickname
Skyhawks - The Stonehill Skyhawks were a Division II college sports team in Easton, Massachusetts. The school's teams compete in the Northeast-10 Conference and have won numerous conference championships since their inception. But what is the origin of their unique nickname?
It all began when Stonehill College was founded by the Congregation of Holy Cross in 1948 as an independent Catholic liberal arts college. At this time, they were known simply as "Stonehill," but it didn't take long for them to decide on a more exciting name for their athletic teams: The Skyhawks!
The inspiration behind this choice came from two sources: firstly, there is an eagle that can be found atop many buildings at Stonehill College - representing strength and power - which led to the idea of using some bird mascot for athletics; secondly, according to legend (which may or may not be true), during World War II a group of pilots flew over campus and yelled out "Sky Hawks!" And so it stuck!
From then on, whenever someone said “Go Skyhawks,” you knew who they were talking about – even if you weren’t familiar with Stonehill College. Today, those exact words fill stadiums across New England each fall when football season kicks off – forever connecting fans around one common bond: loyalty to our beloved sky-blue birds from Easton, MA!
