Nickname
Anteaters - Sports fans rejoice! It’s time to learn about the origins of one of college sports’ most beloved nicknames: The UC Irvine Anteaters.
The story behind this unique moniker dates back to 1965, when a group of students at the University of California, Irvine, were looking for an identity that would set them apart from other schools in the area. After much deliberation and debate, they finally settled on “Anteater” as their mascot – a nod to UCI's location near several ant hills on campus.
Since then, UCI has embraced its nickname with enthusiasm and pride. The school officially adopted it in 1970 after receiving overwhelming support from faculty and alumni; even today, you can find many references to anteaters throughout campus life (including student organizations like ACES - AntEater Sports Club). And while there have been some minor changes over time (most notably changing “Anteater" into "UCI Anteaters"), the core concept remains intact: A fierce yet playful symbol that represents strength and resilience amongst all who identify with it.
In recent years, this popular nickname has taken off beyond collegiate athletics; professional teams such as Major League Baseball's Los Angeles Angels now proudly sport their versions of anteaters' logos or mascots too! As more people become aware of this fun-loving creature from Orange County, California - so does its popularity continues to grow across all levels of sports fandom. So whether you're cheering for your favorite team or enjoying some good old-fashioned trivia night fun - don't forget about those lovable little critters known affectionately as "the UC Irvine Anteaters."

History of the Anteaters
The UC Irvine Anteaters began competing as an intercollegiate team in 1965 when they joined Division I-A (now known as FBS). Struggles on the field marked the early years but gradually began to improve over time with some notable wins against big-name opponents like UCLA and USC. In 1979, under head coach Bill Mulligan, they won their first-ever Big West Conference championship. They made it to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament before falling short against eventual champion Michigan State University Spartans. Since then, they've won several more conference titles, including three consecutive from 2013–2015, which saw them reach two Sweet Sixteen appearances during those seasons, respectively!
In recent years UCI has continued its run of success both on and off the court/field, with numerous individual honors being awarded annually, such as Big West Player(s) of the Year or All-American selections for various teams within the athletics department at large - something no other school can boast about! This consistency is even more remarkable, given how competitive collegiate athletics are today. Yet, despite these challenges, UCSI remains one perennial powerhouse year after year proving why it's so beloved amongst fans everywhere who cheer them every step along the way!
With such an impressive legacy behind them, there’s no doubt that future generations will continue enjoying all the great things associated with being part of Irvine fan – Go, Eaters!!
