Nickname
Titans - As a sports fan, you’re probably familiar with the Cal State Fullerton Titans. But do you know where their nickname originated? The story behind the name is quite interesting, and has been around since 1957.
The original school mascot was a knight in shining armor named “Sir Titan,” who represented an ideal of strength and courage. When Cal State Fullerton officially adopted "Titans" as its official nickname in 1960, it was meant to represent those same ideals of strength and courage that Sir Titan embodied.
The choice of "Titans" also had another purpose: to honor the Greek gods who were believed to have created mankind from clay – thus making them influential figures from mythology that could be looked up to by students at CSUF for inspiration. At the same time, they pursued their academic goals on campus. In addition, many other colleges across America were adopting similar nicknames during this period (such as USC's Trojans), so choosing Titans kept CSUF competitive with other schools when it came time for NCAA playoffs or tournaments!
Today, the Cal State Fullerton Titans are one of just two teams representing California in Division I college athletics (the other being UC Berkeley). With such strong ties between its namesake mythological characters and modern-day student-athletes alike, there's no doubt why this team has become such an iconic symbol throughout Southern California – not only amongst collegiate fans but also professional ones too!

History of the Titans
The Titans began competing at the NCAA level with their men's basketball team in the 1971-72 season under head coach Bobby Dye. The team quickly found success winning their conference title that year and advancing to the Sweet Sixteen of the 1972 NCAA Tournament, where they fell just short against eventual champion UCLA Bruins led by Bill Walton & Co. They would make five more appearances over six years from 1973–1979, including an Elite Eight appearance in 1978 behind future NBA All-Star Reggie Theus, named National Player Of The Year that same season.
In baseball, CSUF has had even greater success than basketball, having made 16 trips to Omaha for College World Series play since 1975, tied for fourth most all-time among programs nationally! This includes four trips during their magical run between 1979 -1984 when they have crowned National Champions twice (1979 & 1984). Notable alumni include current major leaguers Kirk Saarloos (Astros) and Mark Kotsay (Athletics), as well as Hall Of Famer Rod Carew, who played his collegiate ball there before going on the star with the Minnesota Twins & California Angels, respectively.
While not quite reaching those heights yet, the women's program also boasts impressive accomplishments, including three WNIT appearances since 2009 and several Big West Conference titles throughout its history. Most recently, the Lady Titan softball squad reached new heights last spring. It made it into Super Regional play after defeating perennial powerhouse Arizona Wildcats before earning them a school record of 49 wins!
With so much rich tradition across multiple sports, it is no wonder why Cal State Fullerton continues to be one top destination for college athletics today!
