Bobcats - The Texas State Bobcats are one of the most beloved college sports teams in the Lone Star State. With a long and storied history, it’s no surprise that they have such an iconic nickname. But where did this name come from? Let’s take a look at the origins of this unique moniker!
It all started in 1923 when Southwest Texas Normal School became known as Southwest Texas State Teachers College (now known as Texas State University). As part of their rebranding efforts, school officials adopted a new mascot for their athletic teams—the bobcat! This decision was made after students voted on several animal mascots; however, none won by majority vote. So instead, they chose to combine two popular choices: bobcat and panther—hence creating our beloved “Bobcats” mascot we know today!
Since then, the Bobcats have become synonymous with success on and off the field/court. From winning multiple conference championships to producing some great athletes like Earl Campbell (football), LaToya Pringle (basketball), or even Olympic Gold Medalist Michael Johnson – there is no doubt that these cats mean business when it comes time to compete against other NCAA schools across America!
In addition to being successful athletically speaking, The Bobcats also boast one of college football's longest-running traditions - Midnight Yell Practice which has taken place each Friday night before home games at San Marcos High School Stadium since 1932! This event has become so popular among fans that people from all over make sure not to miss out on its legendary festivities every year, regardless of whether they're attending game day!

Texas State Bobcats Mascot
The Texas State Bobcats are the sports teams that represent Texas State University. Currently, they compete in the Sun Belt Conference in NCAA Division I (Football Bowl Subdivision for football). The Bobcat has been the mascot of Texas State University since 1921, when the university adopted the name from the recommendation of a committee formed to raise school spirit. -

The Texas State Bobcats baseball program is the intercollegiate baseball team representing Texas State University. The Bobcats’ first season was in 1985, and have played their home games at Bobcat Ballpark on the university’s campus in San Marcos, Texas since 2009. -
Southland Conference championship
In 2008, Texas State overcame a 21–0 deficit to win the Southland Conference championship with a 48–45 overtime victory against Sam Houston State, its first outright league title since 1982.

History of the Bobcats
In 1957, Texas State began its journey into NCAA competition by joining Division I-A (now known as FBS). The team has since become one of only three programs from that era still competing at this level today. Over its more than sixty years in Division I-A/FBS play, Texas State has achieved many successes on and off the field.
On the gridiron, some notable achievements include winning two Southland Conference championships (in 1967 and 1969) along with seven bowl appearances, including four consecutive trips from 1978–1981, where they earned victories over Florida A&M University twice during that span, earning a share of first place for five consecutive seasons between 1988–1992; capturing four Big West titles between 1996–2001; becoming Sun Belt champions for six straight years between 2012–2017; making two New Orleans Bowl appearances against Appalachian State University which resulted in wins both times (2013 & 2014); reaching nine bowl games since 2006—the most ever by any school during this period—and finally claiming outright or shared conference crowns fourteen out thirteen seasons since 2008!
On top of these accomplishments are numerous individual accolades such as eleven All-American players selected over various periods throughout its history plus twelve different coaches who were named Coach Of The Year honorees within either conference or national organizations like AFCA or AP Polls respectively, among other distinctions too numerous to list here!
With such an impressive record, it’s no wonder why so many fans support them year after year despite all odds stacked against them, sometimes due mainly because they remain actual competitors until the very end, regardless outcome each season!
